The 2021 census has been released and that means it is time to dive right into some population trends. The Atlantic provinces in general have seen a substantial amount of growth from 2016 to 2021 and this post will go into more detail about PEI. You can also read more about the population changes in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

There are only 3 different census divisions in PEI, and between 2016 and 2021, all of them saw population growth. The census division with the highest amount of growth during that time was Queens seeing an increase of 7,927 from 81,843 in 2016 to 89,770 in 2021.

Which areas have seen high growth?

The census division with the highest population growth was Queens. Census division are quite large and cover the entire province. The next level down to consider is the census sub-division, then break that down into the respective dissemination areas. The map below shows population change as a percentage between 2016 and 2021 for Queens.

High growth area #1

The census subdivision that includes Charlottetown saw the most amount of growth within Queens. This area grew by 2,715 residents, from 36,094 in 2016 to 38,809 in 2021.

High growth area #2

The census subdivision to the west of Charlottetown saw the second highest amount of growth within Queens. This area grew by 1,226 residents, from 5,348 in 2016 to 6,574 in 2021.

High growth area #3

The census subdivision south-east of Charlottetown saw the third highest amount of growth within Queens. This area grew by 1,221 residents, from 9,706 in 2016 to 10,927 in 2021.

Which areas have seen the lowest growth?

All three census divisions within PEI saw population growth between 2016 and 2021. The area with the lowest amount of growth was Kings, growing by 2,324 residents from 43,910 in 2016 to 46,234 in 2021.

Population changes in the capital

The census metropolitan area (CMA) of Charlottetown grew by 9,533 residents, from 69,325 in 2016 to 78,858 in 2021.

Overall population density

Not surprisingly, the densest areas of the province are Charlottetown and Summerside.
